World Harvest Festival is back at Sarawak Cultural Village

KUCHING: The World Harvest Festival 2012 (WHF 2012) is back this year from May 26-27 at the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV).

The festival, held in conjunction with Gawai, is an ethnic festival that is one of the highlights of the Gawai Dayak celebrations.

Now in its 8th year, WHF is not only synonymous with the festivities of the Dayaks, but has come to encompass other ethnic groups in Sarawak as well as the tourists, to help reflect the true Malaysian spirit of the people.

The WHF was established in line with Ministry of Tourism Sarawak (MOT) objective to position an international event on its tourism calendar.

The WHF provides the opportunity for the non-Dayaks to understand the cultures, traditions and aspirations of the Dayak community, all within the event.

The amount of the awareness and interest created by this festival brings benefit both the public sector and the tourism industry.

Among the many highlights of the WHF cultural event is the theme play held on May 26.

Last year, it was based on the Bidayuh legend ‘Selanting Kuning & The Dragon King’ and this year it will be on the Iban legend called ‘The Adventures of Keling & Kumang’.

What is unique about this theme play is that the whole village becomes the stage, and the entire play promises to overwhelm the guests in audio and visual splendour.

Another highlight of the festival is the ethnic beauty pageant ‘Miss World Harvest Festival 2012’.

The theme of this beauty pageant revolves around the Iban community.

This year fifteen beauties will vie for the coveted title.

This ethnic beauty pageant has never failed to add colour and vibrancy to the festival.

Last year’s winner of the ethnic beauty pageant was Suljirina Lucas, a 27 year-old Berawan lass.

As always the Harvest Festival or Gawai is celebrated on a grander scale with the participation of cultural troupes from other countries.

This is evident in the International Cultural Concert, with daytime workshops.

This year our friends from Indonesia and Selangor will be joining the festivities.

A series of joint workshop by the locals and the invited troupes will be held during the 2 days festival.

This is the ideal time for visitors to learn about each community’s traditions, foods and handicrafts.

For those who want to prove their manly prowess, there is the Ironman WHF 2012 competition.

This is another highlight of the festival that involves 15 finalists who will exhibit their ‘superhuman’ strength in tackling traditional based activities like blowpipe shooting, coconut dehusking, 50kg gunny rice lifting, wood chopping and mountain climbing.

Last year, Amir Hanafi emerged as the champion.

The WHF promises to be a fun-filled event for the young and old.

Bring along your loved ones and make this an affair to remember.

What awaits you is a cultural extravaganza like no other.

Tunnel boat races are very popular in Kapit and this year, numerous racing teams are set to compete in the various categories namely the 18hp Tunnel Boat, 30hp Tunnel Boat and 40hp Tunnel Boat race.

The recent formation of Kapit Powerboat Racing Club has also helped to promote the water sport in Kapit Division.

The club acts as the governing body to organise boat races not only in Kapit but also in Song and Belaga districts as well. The setting up of the club also served as an umbrella body to unite the various racing clubs while at the same time look after their welfare.

Kapit bursts into life ahead of annual Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari

KAPIT: This usually quiet town at the upper reaches of the mighty Rajang River is witnessing a hive of activities with the annual Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari in the offing.

To pull the crowd the tiny town is holding a host of activities like a Toyota car show; stalls for food and beverage, merchandised goods; ‘pua kumpua’ exhibition and competitions at Tun Jugah Foundation (Fort Sylvia), flower arrangement, cooking competitions, mini-traditional sports, ‘Bintang RTM’, ‘live concert’ and power boat race to attract local and outstation tourists from April 5 to 8.

The booth at the Town Square that stands out among the crowd is the Regiment 510, Camp Sri Rajang, Sibu Territorial Army — Askar Wataniah led by Major Ismanizan and his team of seven rangers.

“We’re here to promote ‘Askar Wataniah’ and register recruits into the army reserve as the nation’s second line of defence.

“It’s open to all male and female Malaysians aged between 18 and 40.

“I encourage healthy members of the public to visit our booth so that our personnel could explain to them the concept of the army reserve, the benefits of becoming a member.

“Those with technical and academic qualifications are welcome to join our ranks,” said Mejor Ismanizam.

This year, a total of 39 teams participated in the various categories of the rafting events along the Mujong River, Baleh River and Rajang River with Kapit jetty the final destination. A new event ‘kayaking’ was introduced to promote the water sport.

This is also the time assemblymen and ministers visit Kapit; notably the Minister of Land Development Tan Sri Dr James Masing, Deputy Minister of Tourism Datuk James Dawos; Assistant Minister of Agriculture (Research) Datuk Mong Dagang; Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Billy Abit Joo and Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi.

When contacted, Kapit Resident Dahim Nadot, who is the organising chairman of the event, felt that the event had among others achieved the spirit of teamwork and co-operation among the locals and the government departments.

“To organise the rafting event is to promote Kapit as the eco-tourism destination.

“This year there are only thirty-nine teams. It could have been more because many teams had registered at the last minute.

“But we had to turn them down because of shortage of funds. It cost around RM160,000 to organise the event and right now we’ve only collected slightly more than RM100,000.

“We need corporations in the private sector to participate in order to be more meaningful.

“In this light, tourism players should play a pivotal role in bringing in the tourists,” he said.

Thousands watch Benak Festival fireworks display

SRI AMAN: Fireworks display at the Benak Festival site was one of the highly anticipated event in the small town of Sri Aman.

Attracting thousands of crowd to throng the waterfront and streets of Sri Aman, the firework display which started at 11.30 pm yesterday left the crowd in awe.

The expensive fireworks lasted for half and hour.

Setting of the fireworks was done at the Fort Alice whereby it also marked the end of Miss Tourism Benak 2012.

All the VIPs joined in to watch the spectacular fireworks display at the grand stage of the waterfront.

Photographers certainly had a good time with their lenses taking view the fireworks display.

The firework display also underlined the capability of Sri Aman residents in attracting visitors to their small town.

Hotels were full since last Thursday, and New Sarawak Tribune saw visitors sleeping inside their vehicle till Saturday.

“Could not find the hotel to stay but we could not afford to miss out the event and its activities,” said one visitor who identified himself as Razali. He was accompanied by two other friends.

For Richard Felix from Sibu, his journey to Sri Aman with his fiancée would be in vain should they go back after discovering there was no more hotel room available.

“I do not want my hours of driving here (Sri Aman) to end up in vain, so I discussed with my fiancée who was reluctant at first but also could not afford to miss out the opportunity to watch the tidal bore,” said Richard.

Around 5.10pm on Saturday, despite the rain, the waterfront was packed with eager crowds who could not wait to witness the tidal bore experience.

However some of them were a bit frustrated as they could not get a good view, and missed out the tidal bore at its peak.

Pre v ious l y Deput y Chi e f Minister Datuk Patinggi Alfred Jabu Numpang did mention that the event which started off with a limited budget managed to pull off a grand show.

“I believe in hard work and patience being displayed by the organising committee has proven that a small amount of capital for a start, but a big effort to make it work really did achieve the desired success,” he said.

Jabu also pointed out that the federal government was interested in funding RM200,000 for Benak Festival in the future. He said this was seemingly promising in making the event more grand.

The state Ministry of Tourism also works hand in hand with a private company to build a hotel in the area, he pointed out.

Apart from that more facilities are expected to be built and upgraded whereby the costs are expected to exceed RM80 million.

Sri Aman town will be much different with all the upcoming plans from interested investors and also the dedication and hardworking people who want to make things happen.

Also present at the event was Deputy Minister of Tourism Datuk Dr.James Dawos Mamit.

Jabu: Use tidal bore carnival to promote Sri Aman globally

SRI AMAN: The Sri Aman Tidal Bore Carnival, locally known as Pesta Benak, is a unique tourism product which can help boost Sri Aman as a famous tidal bore town not only nationwide but also globally, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu.

He said the presence of international surfers proved that the Batang Lupar tidal bore could provide exciting adventure and experience to surfers as a fantastic extreme sport.

“I believe the Batang Lupar tidal bore is a tourism icon which has a very bright potential to be marketed worldwide, provided all quarters including the private sector and non-governmental organisations contribute positively including through active involvement,” he said at the end of the three-day carnival here yesterday.

This year’s carnival saw the participation of 10 surfers, comprising six international participants from France and England, three from Kuala Lumpur and one female surfer from Sri Aman.

The spectators who gathered by the river bank were also treated to thrills and spills from several experienced jet skiers riding their Waverunner jet skis on the Batang Lupar, besides racing with the benak waves.

As such, Jabu said, exciting events, including tidal bore surfing as well as regatta, food fair, culture and arts performances held to coincide with the natural phenomenon, would carve out a tourism niche.

He also called on the local community to grab the opportunity to generate income during such carnivals, adding: “Be smart in promoting and selling local products to the visitors to boost your socio-economic wellbeing.”

All quarters should also work hand in hand to further promote the tourism industry in Sri Aman, in particular to realise the objectives of organising the Sri Aman Tidal Bore Carnival, he said.

Meanwhile, Tourism Deputy Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos urged academicians and universities to carry out scientific studies on the tidal bore phenomenon.

So far, he said, no detailed study on the phenomenon along the Batang Lupar had been carried out while written documents were insufficient to be used as reference for future generations.

Such efforts would enable the Batang Lupar tidal bore to be popularised among the world community, Dawos said.
